Platelet Rich Plasma Therapies.
Platelet Rich Plasma therapy, involves drawing a sample of your own blood, spinning it down in a centrifuge machine, and then, under local anaesthetic, re-injecting just the plasma component back into the body.
Therefore, Plasma therapies are a natural healing process that is not introducing any foreign drugs or substances into the body. As this is your own body’s material, there is no risk of disease transmission or allergic reactions.
The growth factors and platelets in the plasma are very rich in healing and growth factors. They act to kick-start a natural healing and rejuvenation process. Although no treatment is ever 100% effective, many patients experience long-lasting improvements after PRP. PRP can be used for both skin rejuvenation and to treat joint pain and problems.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is also known as plasma therapy, “Vampire face lift” or “natural face lift”.
PRP for Skin Rejuvenation.
PRP can be used to stimulate collagen rejuvenation in the skin. The blood sample is taken from your vein, process in the centrifuge, and then re-injected into the skin using very fine needles. Local anaesthetic is used to minimise discomfort and the whole process takes about one hour.
Platelet Rich Plasma therapies can be used by itself or often in combination with other treatments, such as laser rejuvenation, micro-needling or Omnilux light therapy. Your doctor or dermal therapist can discuss with you the best options for achieving your own personal goals.
The effects of plasma therapies can include an increase in skin thickness, elasticity, tone, improvement in general skin health and vitality, and reduction of fine lines.
Areas which can be treated commonly include the face, hands, neck and dec.
After the procedure.
After the procedure you may have some bruising. You may need a few days off work, depending upon how much skin is being treated. The effects are seen gradually over time. Patients may notice that their skin does not appear to age as fast. Benefits tend to be augmented by using a combination of treatments together, rather than just one at a time.
We usually recommend three treatments, one month apart, and then annual top-up treatments. Click here to read about the pricing of treatment options.
PRP for Joint Problems.
Plasma therapies or PRP, can be used to treat joint problems in the body. Injection of the platelet-rich plasma into the target area stimulates natural rejuvenation and repair, using the body’s own healing mechanisms. No artificial substances or drugs are needed, and there is no risk of transmitting disease from blood or allergic reactions, as it is entirely your own tissue that is being used.
Areas which can be treated include tennis and golfer’s elbow, Achilles tendonitis, shoulder / rotator cuff problems and osteoarthritis of the knee. Your doctor will discuss with you a personalised management plan, which may also include physiotherapy and/or an exercise program.
The treatment usually takes 45-60 minutes and you should not exercise vigorously for several days afterwards. No time off work is expected to be required.
Improvement will be a gradual process over the course of weeks or months. When compared to cortisone injections, the benefits take longer to see but last much longer.
Sometimes after treatment you will have a bruised sensation in the area. This usually lasts just a few hours to a couple of days. In the case of any severe pain, please call us for a review appointment.
You may require several treatments, often three, with an interval of 1-2 weeks between injections. Annual top-ups may be recommended.
